Removing tarnish from Sterling Silver

To remove silver tarnish, you can use several methods that are effective and easy to do at home. Here are a couple of options we recommend, using items you already have in your home, or if you prefer, specialist products:

  1. Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil Method: This method uses a chemical reaction to remove tarnish from silver. First, line a baking dish with aluminum foil. Place the tarnished silver items on top of the foil, making sure they are touching the foil. Sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the silver, then pour boiling water over it, covering the silver completely. Let it soak for a few minutes, then rinse the silver with water and dry it with a soft cloth. Make sure none of the solution remains on the jewellery as it may cause skin irritation.

  2. White Vinegar and Baking Soda Method: In a bowl, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to the tarnished silver using a soft cloth or sponge, rubbing gently until the tarnish is removed. Rinse the silver with water and dry it with a soft cloth. Make sure none of the solution remains on the jewellery as it may cause skin irritation.

  3. Silver Polish: Silver polish, such as Silvo, is a commercial product that is designed specifically for removing tarnish from silver. Follow the instructions on the product label for the best results.

Regardless of the method you choose, it is important to avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals on your silver, as this can scratch or damage the surface. It is also recommended to store your silver in a dry, protected area to prevent future tarnishing.
